Hi Hytaler,
short answer: 4 GB is the minimum, 6 to 8 GB is what you want for a small group of friends, and 10 GB+ once you add mods or more players. Hypixel says 4 GB + Java 25 in the official server manual, but 4 GB is really only enough for you and 2 or 3 friends on vanilla.
If you just want a number, use our RAM calculator.
My own server as example
I run a Hytale server myself, so here are real numbers and not some marketing table:
- 8 GB VPS, 4 cores
- Java started with
-Xmx5632M(so about 5.5 GB for the server) - 41 mods installed
- world folder is 2.9 GB by now
- view radius set to 32 chunks (default is 12)
The Java process sits at around 5.9 GB in
ps. Yes, more than the 5.5 GB I gave it. Java needs some memory outside the heap too, people forget that. And to be honest: the box is too small. There is barely anything left for the system and it already swaps 1.7 GB. So it runs, but it's at the limit. With mods + a big view radius I would go 12 GB next time.
What eats the RAM
- View distance. This is the big one. It's an area, so double the radius and you load around 4x the chunks. Default is 12 chunks (384 blocks). If your server lags or runs out of memory, turn this down first.
MaxViewRadiusinconfig.json. - Players spread out. 10 players in one town is cheap. 10 players exploring in 10 directions is not, every one of them keeps their own area loaded.
- Mods. Depends a lot on the mod, but plan 2 to 4 GB extra for a bigger mod list.
How to set it
In your start script:
Code:
java -Xms2G -Xmx6G -jar HytaleServer.jar --assets Assets.zip
-Xmx is the max the server gets. Don't give it all the RAM of the machine. Leave 2 GB at least for the OS, better more. On a 8 GB box I would not go over 6G (I'm at 5.5 and it's already tight, see above Check what you really use
Let it run one evening with players online and watch it:
Code:
free -m
ps -eo rss,args --sort=-rss | grep java | head -1
If
free shows swap going up, you need more RAM or less view distance.Server still lagging with enough RAM? Then it's often the CPU, see the performance guide. And if people can't even join, check the can't connect guide.
Questions or your own numbers? Post them below, would be nice to compare
