How to Start a Hytale Server (Windows, macOS, Linux & Dedicated Server Guide)
How to Start a Hytale Server Windows, macOS, Linux & Dedicated Server Guide Starting your own Hytale server is easier than you might think. This guide walks you through the setup for all major systems, plus a dedicated server setup. Even if you have never hosted a server before, you can follow this step by step. Official documentation: Hytale Server Manual Table of Contents System Requirements Where to Get the Server Files Windows Setup macOS Setup Linux Setup Dedicated Server (Ubuntu / Debian) Basic Security Tips System Requirements Minimum requirements: 4 GB RAM 64-bit system Java 25 installed UDP port 5520 open Download Java (Adoptium): [Adoptium] Check installation: java --version You should see something...
How to play Hytale with friends (multiplayer explained, Chapter I)
Hi Hytaler, short answer: yes, Hytale is multiplayer. You have 2 ways to play with friends: Share code: you open your own single player world, your friends join with a code. Free, takes 1 minute, but the world is only online while you play. Own server: a dedicated server that runs 24/7. More work, but the world is always there and it handles more players. Everyone needs their own Hytale account. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. There is no official server browser in the game yet, Hypixel still lists "server discovery" as a future addition in the server manual. Way 1: share code (Online Play) Before you start: add each other as Hytale friends. Sounds stupid, but this is the step people skip. The best connection methods and the...
Hytale server commands: the admin list for 0.7.2 (op, whitelist, ban, backup)
Hi Hytaler, there are a lot of command lists for Hytale out there, and many have commands in them that don't even exist (like /deop). So I checked every command here against the 0.7.2 server jar from my own server. If it's in this list, it's in the game. How commands work In the server console and in game chat you type them with a / in front /help lists everything, /help <command> explains one command add --help to any command to see its options, for example /whitelist --help in game you need the permission for it. Commands use permission nodes like hytale.command.<name> First thing: make yourself op On a fresh server nobody is op. You have 2 options: start the server once with --allow-op, join, and type /op self or stop the...
Hytale Goblin gadgets — Scrap Drill, Glider, Rocket Boots, Hookshot and the rest
Hi Hytaler, Chapter I added seven goblin gadgets, and most of them change how you get around or how you mine. Here's what each one does according to the official notes, plus the crafting details the hotfixes added. Where the notes don't say something (exact recipes, mostly), I'm leaving it open. Better a gap than made-up numbers. The seven gadgets Scrap Drill. A mining tool that breaks a 2×2 patch of blocks at once, and it can also break and loot metal blocks. If you're digging tunnels or clearing space for a build, this is the one you want first. Scrap Glider. Lets you glide, dive and climb while keeping your momentum. Watch your Stamina though. The official notes literally warn that the landing "gets interesting" if you run out...
Hytale Runestones explained — all 7 abilities, all 8 modifiers, and how they stack
Hi Hytaler, Runestones are the big combat change in Chapter I. They're also easy to waste shards on if you don't know how the numbers work. Here's the whole system in one place, with the exact values from the official patch notes. I haven't added any of my own guesses on top. How the system works You craft Runestones from Runestone Shards, which you find during Chapter I. An Ability Runestone costs 2 shards, a Modifier Runestone costs 1. You put them into a Runebinder's Lattice to change your combat abilities. There's one in the Forgotten Temple. Your avatar can run two Ability Runestones at once, with Modifier Runestones attached to them. The Lattice won't let you place the same ability twice, and it won't let you put the same...
Update 7 (Chapter I) for server owners — what breaks, what to check, which hotfix to run
Hi Hytaler, Chapter I: Out of the Breach went live on October 12. Everyone is talking about goblins, runestones and the Deepworks dungeon, fair enough. If you run a server though, the patch notes have a few lines that decide whether your players can join at all on day one. Same drill as with Update 6 for server owners, here's the server side boiled down. 1. Client and server have to match again The protocol version got bumped and a bunch of packets changed their wire layout (UpdateBossBar, ItemMovementSettings, ShowEventTitle and more). In plain words: a player on the new client can't join a server still on the Update 6 build. Update the server first, then tell people to update. If you run plugins, they need a rebuild against the...
The Mod Browser, the pre-release branch, and what Update 7 means for modders
Hi Hytaler, Two things changed how mods reach players this year: the in-game Mod Browser in Update 6, and the steady rhythm of pre-release builds. If you make mods or run a modded server, both are worth understanding. The Mod Browser Since Update 6 there's a Mod Browser right in the main menu. It shows featured, popular and recently updated mods, has categories and search, shows version compatibility, and handles install, update and remove. A few things that follow from that: Discovery got a lot easier for players. Before, finding mods meant external sites and manual installs. Now the default path is in-game. If your mod isn't there, a lot of players simply won't find it. Version info matters more. The browser shows...
Update 6 for server owners — what broke, what to rebuild, what got better
Hi Hytaler, Update 6 is mostly talked about for Spectator, Hardcore and the Mod Browser. If you run a server, though, the interesting part is further down the patch notes. A couple of those lines are the reason some servers sat empty for a day after August 27. Table of Contents The protocol bump: hytale/2 → hytale/3 OpenGL 4.1 on the client side NAT got a lot less painful The hotfixes you actually want New admin commands My update checklist 1. The protocol bump: hytale/2 → hytale/3 The network protocol moved from hytale/2 to hytale/3, and the packet layout changed with it. In plain terms: an old server and a new client don't talk to each other. The patch notes are explicit that servers and plugins need to be rebuilt before...
Hytale Hardcore explained — Permadeath, Three Strikes, Nine Lives and Soulbound
Hi Hytaler, Hardcore landed with Update 6, together with Spectator mode, and the two belong together. Here's what each mode does and which one I'd pick for which kind of group. Where you find it Hardcore is set when you create a world: hit Customize, then the Hardcore dropdown. Life counts can be adjusted (anything but zero). It's a world setting, so decide before you start, not halfway through a run. The modes Off. Normal Hytale. Permadeath. Every player has one life. Die and you're out. The classic, and brutal with friends who like to explore ahead. Three Strikes. Three lives each, then you're out. My pick for most groups. You still feel every death, but one bad jump into lava doesn't end someone's evening ten minutes in...
Hytale server hosting: self-host or rent? An honest take
Hi Hytaler, This one comes up constantly, so here's my honest take. There's no universal right answer — only the right answer for your situation. I run servers both ways, and the decision usually comes down to three things: your internet connection, how much you enjoy Linux, and whether the thing needs to be up while you're asleep. Table of Contents Self-hosting: when it's the move Renting: when it's worth the money A rough decision tree The honest middle ground 1. Self-hosting: when it's the move You've got a spare box or a home server, a real public IP, and you don't mind a terminal. Hytale's requirements are modest — 4 GB and Java 25 to start — so an old desktop or a mini PC handles a small group fine. What you get: full...
How to add mods to a Hytale server (and how Hytale modding works)
Hi Hytaler, The thing that trips up everyone coming from Minecraft: in Hytale, mods run server-side. Players join a modded server and download nothing. No client packs, no version-matching arguments, no "you need Forge 47.1.3" in the description. You mod the server, everyone gets the modded experience automatically. Once that clicks, the rest is easy. Table of Contents The three kinds of mod Installing a mod Where it can go wrong Writing your own 1. The three kinds of mod CurseForge sorts Hytale mods into three buckets, and knowing which is which saves confusion: Packs — asset and content mods. JSON data, models, textures. New blocks, items, tweaks. No code. Plugins — Java .jar files that use the server API. This is where...
Backing up a Hytale world before you lose it
Hi Hytaler, Do this one today, not the day after you've lost a world. Your world is the one thing on the server you can't redownload — server files, mods, configs are all replaceable in minutes; three weeks of player builds are not. So back it up, automatically, off the box. Everyone agrees with this right up until the disk dies and they find out their "backup" was a folder on the same dead disk. Table of Contents The dumb version that beats most people Don't copy a world that's being written Get it off the box Test a restore once Where backups fit 1. The dumb version that beats most people A nightly tarball on a cron is thirty seconds of work and puts you ahead of the majority: 0 4 * * * tar czf /backups/hytale-$(date...
Hytale server running like treacle? Where the performance actually goes
Hi Hytaler, When a server lags, people reach for "add more RAM" and stop there. Sometimes that's it. Often it isn't. Hytale's performance comes down to four things — view distance, memory, a single fast core, and the disk — and knowing which one is hurting saves you from throwing money at the wrong part. Table of Contents View distance is the biggest lever One fast core beats eight slow ones Give the heap enough, watch GC Put it on an SSD Stop guessing — watch it under load 1. View distance is the biggest lever View distance scales with area, so it's squared. Bump it from 256 to 512 and you haven't doubled the load — you've roughly quadrupled it. Every loaded chunk is work for the CPU and memory for the heap, multiplied by...
How much RAM does a Hytale server need? Real numbers from my server
Hi Hytaler, short answer: 4 GB is the minimum, 6 to 8 GB is what you want for a small group of friends, and 10 GB+ once you add mods or more players. Hypixel says 4 GB + Java 25 in the official server manual, but 4 GB is really only enough for you and 2 or 3 friends on vanilla. If you just want a number, use our RAM calculator. My own server as example I run a Hytale server myself, so here are real numbers and not some marketing table: 8 GB VPS, 4 cores Java started with -Xmx5632M (so about 5.5 GB for the server) 41 mods installed world folder is 2.9 GB by now view radius set to 32 chunks (default is 12) The Java process sits at around 5.9 GB in ps. Yes, more than the 5.5 GB I gave it. Java needs some memory outside the heap...
Hytale server can't connect? Check these 6 things in this order
Hi Hytaler, short answer: Hytale uses UDP port 5520, not TCP. Most "can't connect" problems are a TCP port forward, a closed firewall, or client and server on different versions after an update. Go through the list below in this order, it takes 5 minutes and saves you a reinstall. Don't want to read? Our connection checker asks you a few yes/no questions and tells you the likely cause. 1. Is the server really running? Sounds stupid, but check it first. On Linux: sudo ss -ulnp | grep 5520 Nothing there = no server listening, the network is not your problem. Look in the log, usually it says it straight: wrong Java, missing --assets Assets.zip or auth not done. 2. Same version on client and server? After every Hytale update this...
Hytale Server Security & Hardening Guide
Hi Hytaler, We was working last days on some Guides and running a Hytale server is fun, but leaving it unsecured can lead to griefing, exploits, crashes, or even full system compromise. This guide covers the most important security steps every server owner should apply, whether you run a private world or a public community server. Table of Contents Run the Server as a Separate User Keep Java and the Server Updated Use a Firewall Limit Open Ports Enable Backups Protect Admin Commands Use Whitelist for Private Servers Monitor Logs Use Screen DDoS Protection and Network Hardening 1. Run the Server as a Separate User Never run your game server as root. Create a dedicated user: adduser hytale su - hytale This prevents...
